CalAmp LMU 4230 Installation Guide - W/ ELD Confirmation
The LMU-4230 package comes with:
The LMU-4230 with internal antennas.
A fused 4 pin power wiring harness with white, black, red and green wires
that attaches through the 4-pin power connector.
A 22 wire I/O cable that connects to the I/O port.
A Deutsch cable with male 9-pin connector that plugs into the vehicle
diagnostic port, a spare female pass-through 9-pin connector (to allow third-party diagnostic readers without disconnecting anything else), and DE15 connector that connects to the LMU-4230 JBUS port.
Optional – 4 wire T emperature Sensor
Vehicle Placement of LMU-4230
The LMU-4230 is not water resistant and must be installed inside the cab where it can stay dry.
Place the unit where it will see as much sky as possible.
Do not place under metal that will obstruct the view of the sky
o GPS signals are very low power and any metal blockage can prevent it from getting good positions.
o The unit can be installed underwood, plastic or glass.
For a covert installation, somewhere inside the dash or cab is best if there
isn’t metal in the dash.
Connecting Power, Ignition, Ground and J1939 harness
Failure to connect the power lines in the manner described may result in the discharge of the vehicle battery or damage to the device.
For best results, it is strongly recommended that the LMU connection is on its own circuit. Connect the power input directly to the vehicle battery if possible and protect the circuit with an inline fuse. If you must connect through the fuse box, use standard commercial wiring practices to create a permanent installation rather than using press-in fuse clips or other temporary measures.
Make sure that the J1939 diagnostic connector and the LMU 4230 power cables are connected to the same voltage power sources. If using a 24 volt system, both should be powered with 24 volts, or both should be 12 volts, but not a mix.
The order that the LMU and JPOD are installed is important, so once everything is wired, follow this order when plugging everything in.
Connect J1939 Deutsch to the LMU-4230 with the DE15 connector.
Plug the 9-pin Deutsch connector into the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
o NOTE: The LMU-4230 will get power through the 9-pin Deutsch port connected to the DE15 connector as well as through the power and ground wires. Even though it will power up when you connect it to the 9-pin Deutsch port, you still need to connect it to power, ground and ignition in the next steps.
The cable also has a pass-through Deutsch connector so you can also plug in any other diagnostic cables that you might use on the vehicle.
The ground line (black wire) must be connected to chassis ground.
The power input (red wire) must be connected to a constant (un-switched) +12 VDC or +24 VDC supply; preferably connected directly to the vehicle battery terminal or as close to it as possible. This connection point should be fuse protected to not more than 5 Amps. The included wiring harness has fused red and white lines rated to 3 Amps.
The ignition input (white wire) must be connected to the vehicle ignition or another appropriate key-operated line, ensuring that power to the ignition wire is available only when the vehicle ignition is on.
If you need to disconnect the LMU, proceed in the opposite order by disconnecting ignition, power and ground, then disconnecting the 9-pin Deutsch connector, then lastly the JPOD from the LMU-4230.
Installation Check List
The following must be checked to declare a successful installation:
1. Turn ignition on.
2. Lights on the LMU-4230
The Green light must be on solid(no blinking) to show it has obtained a valid GPS fix. This means the vehicle will probably have to be outside to get a valid GPS fix.
TheOrangelightwitheitherbesolid(no blinking) to show it has successfully connected to the cellular network or will flash at an irregular interval.
The Red light beside the DE15 port must be flashing.
2. Successfully performed ELD diagnostics using the details in the section below.

Bluetooth discovery and pairing/ELD Diagnostic
From the login screen select the Support option from the menu (top right corner). Login with the support personnel password to scan for ECM-Link devices.
Once the ECM-Link device shows in the screen, tap on it and a diagnostic will be performed on the EDL to make sure all necessary functionality is available.
Once the diagnostic passes, the ELD is ready for driver operation.
In order for the ELD to be compliant several parameters must be acquired from the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) and other internal systems have to be verified. During the diagnostic, the mobile APP will begin collecting the necessary engine data. Support personnel can only release the ELD for driver use after all ELD diagnostics were successfully performed:
